Surfer’s Sunset somewhere in Bali

I figured another Pic of the Week would be a great start for this new chapter of my journey. I just made my way to Bali, the island of gods, in Indonesia. The land of waves is a haven for surfers and surfing was also the main reason why I decided to come here. I wanted to focus on my surfing skills and hopefully finally improve them a fair bit. It is so hard to get better being landlocked in the middle of Europe and being forced to travel in order to catch some waves. A few weeks of surfing in quality waves should be good. Besides that, Bali is also good for the soul. Tasty food, nice people, beautiful landscapes and an inspiring culture. I am not sure for how long I will stay here before continuing my travels, but updates are soon to follow. Hang Lose.

  1. Absolutely beautiful. I can’t wait to get to Bali. Have fun! – Susan

Hi Susan, thanks for your feedback. Bali is great but also has its nasty downsides as I experienced yesterday. I went down to Seminyak, a major tourist area, to do some surfing at the beaches there. The water by the beach was just dark brown, foamy and bubbly. They just seem to drain everything in there, unfiltered. Really really nasty and probably pretty unhealthy as well. That, I must say, was a pretty big disappointment. But yeah, in general the island is beautiful …..

      • How awful! I’m headed to Jakarta tomorrow and Bali a few days later so I’ll be sure to avoid getting in the water at Seminyak. Hopefully you’ll have better luck finding some clean water during the rest of your stay. Any tips on a good place to learn to surf while I’m in the country?

Literally everywhere. Depends on how much time you wanna invest. There are heaps of freelance guides available along Kuta Beaches. Quality varies and I guess you have to be a bit lucky. You can check out Pro Surf School in Kuta which I heard good things about. If you have more time, you could go to surf camp. I just published an article about a good one.

      • Okay thanks so much Phil! I’ll start my search there and see what I find. Enjoy the rest of your time in Indonesia!!
