Pic of the Week 20 – Merry Christmas

A night in the monastery.

A night in the monastery.

I thought this one would be nice for Christmas although it has been taken quiet some time before. Aris and I did that two day trek up in Hsipaw when we discovered a small, picturesque village on our way back. Since we were with a group, we couldn’t stop there for too long. Hence decided to go back to the village the day after and spend the night there. We had nothing arranged, just packed our bags, rented a motorbike to get up the first stretch and then hoped to find our way back to the village and of course to find a place to sleep. The latter was easier than expected and turned to be one of the most unique experiences of my whole journey. We were greeted by a group of monks who invited us into their monastery and offered us a place to sleep in their main hall. During that night, we joked with the novices, showed the pictures we took in the village during the day and had some midnight snacks and tea. There was no electricity and just some blankets to sleep on. But with all the candles illuminating the big hall, it was very special and, once again, a truly magical and unforgettable moment. More on that whole side-trip in the upcoming post.

Until then, I wish all of you, wherever in the world you are right now, a merry Christmas and a relaxed time with your friends and families.

Yours,
Philipp

  1. I love how all the light is focused on the monks — not too much, just a warm and peaceful reddish glow. It really shows the idea of “being in the moment.” And I love the facial expressions, especially the young man looking upward, smiling.

A belated Merry Christmas to you as well, and Happy New Year!

Hi Nerija, good to hear from you again. Yeah, I really like the expression of the little one. Perfect moment, hehe. I will post more pictures of this memorable night maybe today. How are yo doing so close to then end of the new year? Any resolutions for the 2014? Cheers and a happy New Year, Phil

      • Happy 2014! 🙂 How are you celebrating tonight?

I think my biggest resolutions will be to (1) finish all the unread books I have at home, and (2) get more active. I’ve been a little too sedentary this winter. Plus, if I want to get a scuba license, I definitely need to be in better shape.

How about you? What are your resolutions?

Hi Nerija, your resolutions sound good. Especially the scuba diving plan. Let me know how that goes. I myself have not made any great, specific resolutions. I wanna learn how to properly do a handstand ;). That’s already it. I hope you had a good entry into the new year. Have a good 2014! Philipp

      • A handstand sounds like a fun resolution! The only ones I’ve ever done were underwater, in a swimming pool. It’s much easier there 🙂

What do you think?
